Masked Hot Dogs- cold and quivering

This appetizer comes from a little 1955 phamplet: Hot Dogs with recipes from Woman's Day Kitchen. There are some recipes that still sound appealing but this idea just sounds really bad. A cold hot dog chunk with gelatin coating seems truly revolting. Were you suppose to just pop it in your mouth or sit it on a cracker or what. The photo makes it look just as bad as it sounds.
Masked Hot Dogs
Soften 1 envelope unflavored gelatin in 2 tablespoons water; dissolve over hot water. Add to 1/2 cup creamy French dressing. Dip frankfurter pieces in mixture; let set; redip; chill.

Oh Rochelle, if there was a Bad Retro Snack award this would win the gold medal, no question. This is truly awful!

Rochelle, have you seen the book, The Gallery of Regrettable Food, by James Lilek? The author has managed to unearth some of the worst recipes and food photography from the 40s, 50s, and 60s. It's a fun read, and I'm sure you'd be inspired!!!
Btw, I see that you have a degree in 'home economics.' I do also - they don't call it that anymore!!

I have several old Knox and Jello cookbooks, and I have never come across this. We salute you; you have plumbed new depths in gelatin-cookery.

HI Rochelle..(:)
oh thanks for stopping in and that was so sweet of you to say ...I always feel good when I "DO good"..A win- win situation..
Except one time I was traveling on a train and was trying to open a hallway door and a woman who looked kinda like a bag lady was right behind me ..I said 'do you know how to open this' --she said 'I don't know you and I don't want to know you' ...I was shocked~!!!
I also think she was drinking ~~
OH well (:) I got over the initial shock and went back to my seat and stuck my head back in my book ~~LOL But I had a story to tell my sister when I got to her house in Seattle..

Hope all is going well for you ..
hugs Patty

Hi Rochelle,
WOW! I'm not sure I would want to tempt anyone's tastebuds with that hot dog. It seems to me I have seen this recipe before in my Cooking with Insects Cookbook. I'll have to check when I get back to PA.

None the less, interesting post. We need to know the ickest so we can enjoy the BEST!!!

I popped in from Retro Kitchen. I'd say you picked the right word for this idea: revolting.
It's really a horrifying recipe.
